Teams do not slow down because of headcount. They slow down because every new person has to reverse-engineer decisions that were never written down.
The pre-hire checklist
- A README that gets a laptop to a running app in under thirty minutes
- One command to run tests, one to deploy, one to roll back
- An architecture decision log, even three paragraphs per decision
- A staging environment that mirrors production closely enough to be trusted
None of this is glamorous, and all of it compounds. The team that writes decisions down is the team still shipping weekly at twenty people.
