Designing for the empty state
Every product is at its worst the first time someone opens it. Most teams design that screen last.

The dashboard mockup in the pitch deck is full of data. The dashboard your first customer sees is empty. That gap is where activation goes to die.
Three states, always
- Empty: what this will show, and one obvious action to fill it
- Loading: skeletons shaped like the real content, never a spinner over a blank page
- Error: what broke, what it means for the user, and what they can do next
Seeding an account with realistic sample data on signup is the single highest-return activation change I have shipped repeatedly, it turns an empty product into a tour.
